Module 2: Flatness vs. Projection

WORLD 5-1 FINAL outline copy main copy-0

Take away...

The process of curating the world above involved a lot of trials and errors. Exploring the idea of creating a three-dimensional space from merely two flat two-dimensional elevations exposed me to the different ways in which colour, direction, scale and variation can be represented in pictorial space which is eternally resigned to its frontality. The key concept of my world was to represent a subtle abstract theme of futuristic desalination and water storage industry unit while drawing slight inspiration from MC Escher's "Relativity" where he used a complex chaotic stairway labyrinth to demonstrate the illusion of abstract dimensionality. The main way in which I explored projection was to project both my elevations backwards so that they would interact with each other in the middle. In doing so, I realised that my exploration was more focused in the horizontal rather than the vertical direction so I tried to add a few more vertical elements in the hidden space while staying as true to my elevation as possible. While working and while reflecting upon the aftermath of the world I created, I realised how axonometric projection unlocks the limitations of projection in contrast to orthographic and perspective and the various ways that I could still represent continuous space and increase the sense of time and motion in the world curated by me.

Feedback provided on the previous submission indicated weak use of colour to represent the three-dimensionality of the world curated, where the light source was not evident and there were errors in the areas of highlights and shadows. I improved upon this by attempting to recolour the world with a consistent light source in mind and using a more coherent set of colours. Another area that I could still improve upon is creating more visual interest and complexity by experimenting with different variations of the main building blocks using technical methods such as scaling and rotating, as well as creativity.
