Part 1: Wall
Precedent Studies

2)M.O.D.E.S construction of Chinese ancestral hall based on digitized brick patterns
The 'yan ancestral hall,' developed by Shanghai-based design studio M.O.D.E.S and located in the remote hamlet of Yulin in China, looks into the feasibility of low-tech solutions for a digitally designed and non-standard architectural arrangement. The workflow is suitable for the country's general circumstances here, implying that a procedure has been built by looking into the knowledge of the local labourers. Traditional material quality and labour skills are notably lacking in the rural context. As a result, native clay brick and recycled roof tiles have taken precedence over other materials. The key structural element that stands out is the juxtaposition of curved and straight surfaces.
1) Early Modern Brick and the Perforated Qing Cross in Korea
They believed that from a practical sense, perforated brick was a compromise between privacy and environmental management. Air could pass across a courtyard, for example, by leaving gaps in the wall, although casual passers-by were unable to look into the property. This might hypothetically ease the changes in microclimates caused by gridded streets and new structures that reversed wind patterns in dense urban areas. Perforated brick serves to break up an otherwise simple wall or facade from an aesthetic standpoint. In most cases, it was purely aesthetic and superficial, intended to improve the building's appearance.

Design Response

Take away...
Exploring the art of brickwork turned out to be quite a surprising revelation of how inventive design can be, even with the most simplistic and mundane objects. It made me more aware and appreciative of the built environment that I live in, making me observe the intricacies involved in the patterns of brick layering more carefully. And incorporate them in my design. Masonry walls are all around us and it is perhaps their commonality that makes them blend in into any environment they exist it.

Exposed brick walls are often touted as highly desirable for apartments, restaurants, and stores, and exterior brick facades can make a building or home feel warmer and more inviting. Brick is one of the most popular materials for architects designing with a vintage or rustic aesthetic: exposed brick walls are often touted as highly desirable for apartments, restaurants, and stores, and exterior brick facades can make a building or home feel warmer and more inviting. The colour and cut of the brick, on the other hand, can have a big impact on the ambiance it creates, with white brick being more minimalist and tan brick being more rustic and earthy.

In terms of structure itself, one can be so creative with the layering process as evident from the precedents above. Multiple spatial configurations are possible due to the great range of how masonry blocks can be assembled. The brick, which is made in a furnace, adorns, reinforces, defends, and—to varying degrees—brings natural light into rooms that require it. Traditional brick-laying consisted of a present arrangement of pieces and rope lines to guide the consistency and placement of each individual brick throughout history. Even with the same restrictions that we had, it was interesting to see all my peers come up with so many different inventive designs, each of them unique in their own way.
